The Sanibel Arms Vacation Guide
Looking For a Unique Eatery in Sanibel Island? Try These Out-of-the-Box Restaurants
Florida remains a top travel destination, offering sandy beaches and warm weather to its 87.3 million visitors in 2011. For those who want to experience the beauty of the gulf up close, our oceanfront condo rentals offer the perfect getaway. But it's not all about sand and sun. For many folks, local cuisine is an important part of the vacation experience. And if you're really looking for a unique eatery, you'll have to try these three Sanibel-area spots during your trip.
The Mad Hatter
If you have a flair for fantasy, step through the looking glass into The Mad Hatter, one of Sanibel's newest dining spots. Owners Kurt and Michelle Jarvis transformed this former beach cottage into a surprisingly elegant eatery with a whimsical touch. Quotes from renowned British author Lewis Carroll's characters may decorate the walls, but the menu is decidedly all-American. From fresh seafood to beef filet and rack of lamb, the dishes are sure to please any crowd. And with its idyllic view of the Sanibel sunset, guests won't be eager to leave Wonderland to retire in their oceanfront condo rentals.
The Island Cow
If you're in the "mooo-d" for "udderly good food," stop into this fun and wacky restaurant for breakfast, lunch, or a creamy milkshake. Don't be fooled; this place may be covered with cow figurines, but they take their food seriously. In fact, The Island Cow was voted Sanibel's best lunch and family dining experience for more than a decade. From creative cocktails and delectable muffins to egg-celent omelettes and fresh fish, their extensive menu means it'll be easy for everyone to find something delicious to munch on.
The Bubble Room
You'll have to travel to Captiva for this last one, but the short trip may be well worth it. In 1979, the Bubble Room opened as a family-run eatery decorated with a modest collection of antique toys. These days, the rainbow exterior provides a hint of the massive amounts of toys and quirky artwork housed inside. Many of the menu items have been offered since the Bubble Room opened its doors, like their Carolina Moons (big portions of homemade potato chips, available with cheese and bacon). Sticky buns are served with every entree, and their oversized desserts are infamous. This is a must-stop for those with a sweet tooth! And as the proprietors like to say, "It's always Christmas at the Bubble Room."
